Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Believe in Unicorns

Welcome to day 1 of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs. You are going to have so much fun with this group of stamps. I can hardly wait to share! And we are starting off with unicorns!! Yep really….unicorns! I believe and you will too!!

Look at these adorable images!! They just beg for pretty, bright colors. I stamped them onto Strathmore Bristol paper using Versafine Onyx Black ink and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I watercolored using Zig Clean Color Markers in “rainbow” colors. It is such fun to play with how the colors blend and the unicorn is the perfect place to try out combinations. Once colored, I cut the images out with the matching dies. I also added some extra clouds from the Winston Takes Flight set. Love how so many sets coordinate together. I created a curved layer using the Land Borders Dies and then sponged on a little bit of Distress Ink to help the image pop a bit. I used Melon Mambo card stock to frame the image panel. A clean card that focuses on the bright and happy colors! Such fun to create and I can’t wait to color these images some more!! And here is the best part…

Freshly Made Sketches #300

So today is a very special day for the whole team at Freshly Made Sketches. We have hit another milestone and we are thrilled to celebrate! Sketch #300!! WOW! I’m personally just in awe of the inspiration that all the players over the years have given. I might be a little biased but this has been an amazing challenge from the very beginning. And yes….I actually played along on Sketch #1. I even got chosen as a Perfect Princess by my friend Linda (I knew I loved her, haha!!!). Jen Mitchell, Linda Callahan and Rita Wright have been on the team since the beginning and we have had amazing stampers with us along the way. What a privilege it is to work with people who are not only extraordinarily talented but also are simply incredible people!!

So that was my inspiration for today’s card. The sentiment pretty much says it all (it is from the gorgeous new Vibrant Thanks by Power Poppy)! Thanks to you, my blog readers, and to all who play along each week and keep this challenge fresh week after week. I enjoy seeing your creations, and watching as you all grow in your crafting along with us. After all, we are first and foremost enablers! I used this beautiful paper from last year’s Stampin’ Up Catalog (this year’s catalog features a fresh version in the new In Colors). I love how the leaves in the paper coordinate with the new Layered Leaves embossing folder so I combined them for the panels. I added some Navy twine that I unravelled to give it a looser look. I even lined the envelope with designer paper to make it extra special.

And I really tried to make this extra special since one of our players this week will win all the cards created by the team for this challenge. I know. And I already asked if I could enter again…. Apparently it would look suspicious if I won. *smile* I continue to be astonished at how different cards can be that are created from the same sketch and the design team has created a beautiful variety for you this week. I very much hope you will have time to join us in our celebration. Having a hard time not getting too “sappy” (as my kids call me) so I’ll leave it there. I’ll see you in the gallery.

Coffee Makes You Sharper!

Today is my day to share a project on the Newton’s Nook Designs Blog and I wanted to share a fun card with this adorable Cuppa Cactus set. It is such a fun set for coloring and I love this sentiment!

I tried a new color combination for today and I really like this pale yellow with the purple. I chose the purple for coloring the cup and then mimicked it with the Sea Borders Dies to add a little scallop edge on the bottom of the image panel. I think it adds an interesting pop of color but it is super easy to create. I pulled out a button, which somehow seemed to be just the right touch for the twine.

Now I know this is a pretty clean card but I wanted just to spend a few minutes on the coloring. Seems like time is at a premium but the coloring was just what I needed for a little “mom break”. Only one more week until school is ready to start and then I’ll have lots more time for more complicated cards. Until then, less layers, pretty colors…yep, totally a summer vibe. Newton’s Nook Designs and Xyron Inspiration Week

Welcome back for a special post today. I’m so excited to share that Newton’s Nook Designs and Xyron have partnered for an amazing inspiration week. Each day this week there are fresh ideas using Newton’s Nook Designs stamps and Xyron adhesives on both the NND blog and the Xyron Facebook page.As I thought about how to best show you both the stamps and the adhesive, I realized that a window card would be perfect for both! I chose the Toucan Party stamp set (it really is fun, don’t you think?!) and created this fun window that depends on the strength of a good permanent adhesive. I colored the images using Copic markers to coordinate with this Color Theory DSP from Stampin’ Up. Want to see the inside?

Because it is easier to explain “in person”, I created a video to show you how I colored the images and created the card.

Freshly Made Sketches #299

What is it about summer that seems to fly by?! Another week has come and gone already. I survived clothes shopping with the “back-to-school duo” and we are trying to fit in as much summer as we can over the next couple of weeks until school begins. With that, I am back today with a card for Freshly Made Sketches. The incredible Kim Singdahlsen has given us a unique and fantastic sketch that is sure to inspire you! I just love it!!

While I first thought about using some pretty papers for the panels, I realized that I liked the idea of washi tape instead. I found two from SU in my stash that have differing width stripes and I thought they would be great together. I created a watercolor background using Picked Raspberry Distress Ink and then added the washi tape. I stamped the gorgeous sentiment from Studio Katia in Versafine Onyx Black and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder. A few little sequins to finish. It kind of has a summer feel to it, don’t you think? Fun, bright and a little bit of whimsy.

Freshly Made Sketches #298

Hello friends!! Sorry about the long break. Pesky work and fun summer activities have gotten in the way over the last couple of weeks and I haven’t had any real time in the stamp room. GASP!!! So what to do when presented with a great sketch over at Freshly Made Sketches? When it is a million degrees outside in July? Create the first Christmas card of the year, of course! I love this sketch by the witty and fabulous Linda Callahan.

As soon as I saw this one, I started pondering a meandering group of images on the diagonal. Somehow, these pretty little leaves and flowers practically jumped out of the stamp collection and a Christmas card was born. I stamped the images from WPlus9’s Be Merry in Momento Tuxedo Black and colored with Copic Markers using traditional colors. Something about the pops of red and green against the white base really made me happy. I confess that the sentiments in this stamp set are what drew me in and I LOVE this one.

Well, I’m back to my previously scheduled chaos. On the agenda today….back to school clothes shopping. For a rising high schooler and a rising middle schooler. Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration Blog Hop

First of all, today is the day that the 4 Year Celebration release goes live over at Newton’s Nook Designs. To continue the fun, we are having a blog hop and I’m so thrilled to be a part of it.

I told you yesterday that my favorite set from this release was Cosmic Newton (but seriously, choosing a favorite is like choosing a favorite ice cream…I love them all!). I used the new Stampin’ Up Embossing paste with the Starfield stencil on watercolor paper to start off my background. Next I added Chipped Sapphire Distress ink by painting it on with a brush. I got some of the light and dark coloring with that but wanted a little more dark. So I pulled out the trusty acetate and smooshed some more ink on, spritzed with water and applied to the panel. After it dried a bit, I spritzed on a Perfect Pearls mixture (in a spritzer with the powder and some water) to get a shine on the panel. And finally, I splattered on some Smooch Ink to add some extra “stars). I added a bit more of the Perfect Pearls onto the stars to help them pop. For the trees behind Newton, I used the Land Borders Dies. I was thrilled when it looked like the tops of trees in the shadows. Finally, I colored Newton and his telescope with some more Distress Ink. What a fun card to make!! This set just lends itself to fabulous backgrounds and tons of creativity!

I’m sure you notice how much fun I have had with the stencils this week. Well, there is a great deal that you are sure to love!So pretty much you can get the Pawprints stencil free on the order you were already going to make! WIN!! And speaking of winning…there is even MORE to win this week.

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 4

Today is the last day of reveals for the 4 year celebration with Newton’s Nook Designs. But fear not…we are back tomorrow with a bonus hop to complete the celebration!! But first, I get to share with you my very favorite set from this release! It is called Cosmic Newton. Oh my goodness is it fantastic!

For this card, I thought it would be fun to play with watercolor paints. So I started with the background. On a piece of watercolor paper, I painted on some blues and even a little purple to create a sky that would be right for the new Starfield stencil. After letting my panel dry, I used the stencil as an embossing plate but running it through my Big Shot with an Impressions Pad and a Silicone Rubber Pad. It gives a subtle embossing look that I was really happy with. You can see me more of the detail here:

But then I returned to using the stencil as just a stencil. I kept it in place and the sponged on some white craft ink on the stars toward the top of the card. Then I brushed a bit of Perfect Pearls on top of that to add some shimmer. I have to confess that I’m pretty in love with the whole effect!! For my friend Newton, I thought he needed a really special rocket to stand out against the sky, so I chose purple for his ship. It is hard to tell here but I added some more Perfect Pearls on the window around Newton and also on the banner.

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 3 (and FMS)

Back with day 3 of the 4 year celebration with Newton’s Nook Designs. Today we are showing off one set that I just think is adorable. It is called Toucan Party…such fun! I combined the reveal with the sketch from Freshly Made Sketches (where I am the sketch hostess this week).

The first thing I did for this card was pull out the awesome new Tropical Leaves stencil and create this background with Distress Ink (Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn). Just look at what a great foundation it gives a card. Can I tell you how happy I am for these new stencils?? And it seems like all of you are loving them too! Then I stamped the toucan and some leaves and flowers using Versafine Onyx Black ink and colored using more Distress Ink. Want to see my “muse” for this one?

Just look at his amazing coloring!!! Nature certainly does it best so I just mimicked his colors. And I LOVE them!! Check out his little blue feet!!! Yeah…I know. Who can resist that?! Clearly not me! I colored some of the leaves as a background for him and then the flower as a balance element. I used the small panel of the sketch to show off part of the sentiment (and the puns in this one are super fun). Here is the sketch if you want to join in this week…I’d be thrilled to see you!

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 2

Are you ready for another day of celebration with Newton’s Nook Designs? Yesterday was quite the reveal, don’t you think?! Well, today you get to see two more stamp sets! It keeps getting better!

The first stamp I am going to show you is called Stowaway Newton. Now I don’t know about you, but I know a certain cat (a calico who shall remain nameless, haha) who likes to pack herself in my bag. And when I come home from trips, if I keep the bag closed she simply sleeps on top of it. So when I saw this set, I fell in love. I created the luggage I wish I could carry around airports by coloring with Copic Markers. Behind the image, I used the new Pawprints Stencil and some Distress Ink. This stencil is going to become a go-to with all my Newton stamps! The sweet little sentiments in the set are fabulous and I stamped this one with Versafine Onyx Black. I added a little bit of washi tape along the edge to finish this bright, happy card.

Apparently bright and happy was on my mind for today’s release cards because I chose a similar palette for this great set called Cocktail Mixer. I played around with my Distress Inks to created this pair of tropical drinks. Don’t they look tasty?! And what better sentiment than the one from the coordinating die set! I cut the sentiment from Bristol Smooth paper and then colored it using the same inks as the drinks. Kind of a tropical rainbow! Then I did the same rainbow effect for the side border. This is such an easy technique but it creates such a wow effect.
