Freshly Made Sketches #286

FMS286 by Jen Timko | Butterflies Thinlets by Stampin' Up, WatercolorOh yes we do have another wonderful sketch today at Freshly Made Sketches!  Our hostess this week is the amazing Narelle and this is a classic go-to sketch for sure.

I started with the intention of using a stitched circle under the butterfly but once I had the butterfly cut, I realized I liked it by itself.  I used my Winsor and Newton watercolor paints for all the coloring on this. First I simply painted a piece of watercolor paper with the pretty Turquoise and cut it out using the Butterflies Thinlits.  Then I painted on the swooshes using Cadmium Yellow and Alizarin Crimson.  The nice thing about paints is that when you let the layers dry, the colors don’t blend and you can get them to layer nicely.  Super simple and no real drawing talent required (but I still FEEL like an artist when I use the paints, haha).  I added a sentiment from an old Paper Pumpkin set because I love this font and, well, it is always nice to have birthday cards on hand.  A few little sequins for a small extra touch.

I know this will be another stunning gallery (they always are) and I hope you’ll have time to play along with us.  Thanks so much for stopping in today!  See you soon!

A Little Birdie by Jen Timko | Inky Paws Challenge #40, Newton's Birthday Flutter Stamp Set, Newton's NookI am happy to be joining in the latest Inky Paws Challenge today!  This is such a fun challenge site and one I know you are going to love.  A great place to share your Newton’s Nook Designs creations!  This week there is a sketch challenge so you KNOW I had to join in!

I used this adorable little set called Newton’s Birthday Flutter.  When you hit the age I am (unnamed, of course), there is a need for humor in your cards.  I knew I would find lots of uses when I got this!  For the record, the inside sentiment says “so I ate him”.  Love it!!  I sent this to my sister-in-law who I know will appreciate the humor.  I colored this sweet kitty with my Zig Clean Color Pens and added some fun DSP to follow the sketch.  I hope you enjoy it!

You can join in the challenge and link up so the team can see your work.  I hope you will join in!  Oh…and it is open for two weeks so there is lots of time!  As for me, I’ll be back tomorrow with a post on a project being shared on the Newton’s Nook Designs blog.  I can’t wait to show you!  Until then, have a great day!

Jen Timko - FMS272 | Stampin' Up Bold Butterflies Dies, Butterflies Dies, Watercolor Wings Stamp SetAfter the whirlwind of posting last week, I have been taking advantage of this week’s quiet to take care of non-stamping things.  But I finally got back into the stamp room yesterday and took a good look at the amazing Cécile‘s fun sketch over at Freshly Made Sketches this week.  The first think that popped into my head was butterflies (not sure why since they are clearly circles….but she did say any shape!).  Sometimes it is best just to go with it to see what happens!

I colored some Ranger Watercolor Paper (it is white) using Tim Holtz Distress Inks with the pretty aquas and pinks and set it aside to dry.  While I was waiting, I used the Bold Butterflies and Butterflies Dies (they coordinate) from SU to cut the intricate butterflies from White Vellum Card Stock.  Then I cut the colored paper with the outline dies of the same sets.  I pulled the stamp set from the same family, Watercolor Wings, and used the dotted border and sentiment stamped in Smoky Slate.  To help match the circle elements from the sketch, I added a white doily and some Silver Metallic Thread behind the butterflies.  I used the Fine Tip Glue Pen to attach the vellum to the colored butterflies and was amazed to see that you cannot see the adhesive.  (I had planned to use pearls to conceal it but went with a cleaner look when I realized I could.)

All in all, this is such a fun and easy card to make.  You could use DSP or watercolor different colors or even add glimmer paper to alter the feel of the card and make a pretty set.

I love how the design team has interpreted this one and I’m sure you’ll agree that they are amazing!  I hope you have fun and will join us in the gallery this week.  Back on Friday for this month’s Fancy Friday.  Until then, have a great week!
