Whimsical Farewell

Welcome to the Stampin’ Addicts Retiring Sets Mega Hop!!  If you joined me from The Stampin’ Bunny, I’m sure you were impressed by Rhonda’s projects with A Beautiful Thing.  Her work always inspires me!  If I am your first stop, you can find links to the entire hop over at Stampin’ Addicts.  After the hop you can look around over there for all the “Positively Stampin’ Up” fun…it is a super site with lots of amazing artists!

I am so thrilled that you stopped by to see my projects with the retiring set Garden Whimsy.  This has been a wonderful “go-to” set for me because the images always make me smile!  It is that time of year here in VA…the long awaited last weeks of school.  Since the kids have been counting, I’m not sure how it snuck up on me but my first project is a quick little treat box.  Perfect for 4 pieces of Ghirardelli chocolate squares…and for a last minute teacher treat!!  I will have more info available on Monday with the “how-to” on this box.  It is such a great way to use up some of those last strips of DSP and it comes together in about 10 minutes.  I used Basic Black card stock for the box and Lovely Flowers DSP (Hostess) to brighten it up.  The little lady bug uses Melon Mambo, So Saffron and Basic Black Stampin’ Write Markers.  I stamped her on Whisper White then punched her out with the 1 1/4″ circle punch.  The So Saffron circle was punched with the 1 3/8″ circle punch and the Scallop Circle is Melon Mambo.  I put the box together using Sticky Strip and then used dimensionals on the bottom of the Scallop Circle to attach it to the box.  The Corner Rounder punch finished up the box perfectly.   If you want to see any project closer, just click on the picture.

My next project uses the big butterfly from Garden Whimsy.  This butterfly happens to be PERFECT for the Rock n’ Roll technique.  If you aren’t familiar with this technique, you need to be!  It is a super way to add dimension to large solid stamps.  First you ink up your stamp with a lighter color.  Then chose a complementary darker color and “roll” the stamp’s edges on the ink pad.  Make sure that the darker color pad is dark enough to not be corrupted by the lighter color ink.  I used my Black marker to finish off the butterfly’s antenna.  The words are from the retiring hostess set Lovely Flowers, the DSP strips are from Lovely Flowers and Tea Party.  I used the circle punches again to keep a continuity amongst the projects.  The layout is courtesy of Karen Giron and her Sweet Sunday Sketch Challenge.

Finally, I wanted to use another technique and the “out of the box” look works really well with the flower in this set.  I simply stamped the flower and the butterfly, then using my paper cutter I cut up to the edges of the flower.  The rest was trimmed with scissors.  I love how the black really pops the Melon Mambo on this card!

I hope that you have enjoyed your stop here at Stampin’ on the Fly!    Here is a final look at all the projects together:

I’d love to hear what you think about my projects so don’t forget to leave a comment.  Your next stop is to visit Joyce at Stampin’ Central.  She is using the beautiful Le Jardin Botanique and you will love her work!!  Your jaw will drop when you see her brayering!!  Enjoy the hop and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Trendy Father's Day

Trendy Father's Day published on No Comments on Trendy Father's Day

My club this week needs a Father’s Day card and I just love to use trees for those masculine projects!  Trendy Trees is such a versatile set and I continue to love every project I see with it.  In my search for the perfect layout, I went to Mary Jo Price-Williams’ blog, Technostamper, to see her Monday Lunchtime Sketch Challenge.  Well, number 124 was just right for my card!!  Take a look:

I turned it on the side to accomodate the trees and off I went.  I used the Old Olive paper from the Sweet Pea stack (ret, Occasions mini).  I will be giving some of that away at my club meeting this week since it is our last get-together for this Stampin’ Up year.  I love how the Chocolate Chip pops on the Kraft (soon to be Crumb Cake) paper.  I tied the Chocolate wide grosgrain with the linen thread to finish the look.

This just feels like a “Dad” card to me.  I used some of the matching DSP inside along with the “Dear Father” stamp from Well Scripted.

Just a reminder, I am participating in a Stampin’ Addicts “Retiring Sets Mega Hop” that runs from Friday, Jun 11th through Sunday, Jun 13th.  Please plan to stop by and see my projects using Garden Whimsy!!  Have a great day!

Jazzed up Flowers

Jazzed up Flowers published on No Comments on Jazzed up Flowers

The challenge over at Stampin’ Royalty today is to “Jazz it up” and what a fun thing to do.  I knew I wanted to join in as soon as I saw the cool projects the Goddesses had made!  You start with a basic card or other project and then create a jazzed up version.  I didn’t have anything around that worked so I created a new basic card using the Splitcoast sketch challenge, SC283.  Here is my basic card:

I used the soon to be retiring DSP, Lovely Flowers (hostess) and cut out a flower panel and then used the other patterns to add to the layout.  I have really loved using this paper when I need a quick card that still has a wow factor!  At first I thought that I might even like the basic card better but then…

Well, I added some ribbon (SAB’09 Ret), cut out a flower and popped it up with a dimensional, and put on a sentiment (to match the scallop trim), and here is the jazzed up version:

Ok, I’m convinced…jazzing up was the right thing to do!  I just love this color combination and I am so happy that ALL of these colors will still be available as part of the Color Renovation.  While this DSP will be gone, I can tell you that I have seen a sneak peek of a DSP that has similar qualities.  The new catalog launch is just around the corner!!  Can’t wait!!

Thanks for stopping in!  Here is one more picture of the two cards together.  Have a great day!

Remembering…

Remembering… published on No Comments on Remembering…

As we approach this Memorial Day weekend, my title has two meanings.  First and most important, I want to thank those who serve and those who have served our country in the Armed Forces.  For the families who have made the ultimate sacrifice, there are no words of gratitude to express my family’s appreciation.  While I’m a big fan of cooking out and getting together with family (doing both this weekend), my heart is sad for those whose loved ones are deployed and whose parties will be missing that special somone this year.  My own husband is away this weekend but I am so lucky to have him home every couple of weeks or so.  I know that he is particularly happy to be able to bring needed supplies to the frontline troops who need them!!

My title, for the second part, is about saving special memories.  As we approach the end of Stampin’ Up’s celebration of National Scrapbooking Month, it seemed fitting to post a scrapbook page.  This one was created using My Digital Studio.  Talk to your demo about it because it is a super program with new “papers”, “stamps”, and “punches” becoming available all the time.  I have been working on a scrapbook project (traditional) and have been using some of the designer layouts from MDS as a springboard.  Such a time saver!!

The layout today comes from Margaret Moody over at Pals Paper Arts, their challenge PPA44.  Go take a look at their wonderful projects using another super-usable sketch!  I also used the colors from Diva Coffee Break Designs, DCBD 178.  The patriotic colors matched my patriotic sentiment this morning!!

The pictures were taken in the cargo compartment of a C-5 at last year’s Andrews AFB airshow.  Jacob just loves that big airplane!!

Thank you for stopping by.  Wishing you a safe and happy Memorial Day holiday!!

Retiring Ruby

Retiring Ruby published on No Comments on Retiring Ruby

When I first saw that Ruby Red was retiring, I must admit that I was worried.  I mean really, Ruby Red works so well with some of my favorite colors (Not Quite Navy, Always Artichoke, Chocolate Chip).  Then I saw that Riding Hood Red was coming back and I started feeling better.  Well, THEN I saw the new Cherry Cobbler and fell in love!  You are going to “need” that red!!!  Just like I have been doing with other retiring colors, I have started using it up.  Yep, I’m committing to it all being gone.  Since I was in a “retiring” mood yesterday, I pulled out some really old stuff to play with.  As I looked around for inspiration, I went over to Stamping 411 and saw this really great sketch:

I needed a birthday card for a friend’s 40th.  His wife threw him a fun party yesterday and he is a very good sport when I enable his wife on all things Stampin’ Up!  I have loved the Wonderful You set for masculine cards since I first got it.  I also had some old kits with tag stuff (I even forget what it is called).  But it had the scalloped rectangles made with the Kraft paper, so I was ready to work on this layout.  Kraft, Chocolate and Ruby….fantastic together for a “man” card!  I made my own little tags but it just shows that I need another punch…LOL.

Now, I shouldn’t tell you because I want the blog candy but the Operators over at Stampin’ 411 are offering some amazing blog candy for your participation in this challenge.  There is a fun game to play over there too, so check it out!

Hope you have a great week.  Thanks for stopping by!

Almost time to say goodbye…

Almost time to say goodbye… published on No Comments on Almost time to say goodbye…

to Almost Amethyst!  I must admit that I haven’t been a big user of this purple but the Tea Party DSP has given me a new appreciation for this shade.  Yesterday over at Stampin’ Celebration, they posted this fabulous inspiration:

Beautiful, isn’t it??!!  As previously stated, I don’t have a lot of purple but Tea Party seemed to fit the bill nicely with the Saffron and Celery that are also in the paper.  I saw the newest sketch from the OCC Sketch Blog, their OCCSC16.  Love this one!!

The big flowers on the DSP and the sketch seemed to be made for each other.  I cut out a couple of the flowers and pulled out my lovely Celery satin ribbon.  The scallop border will be available again soon (I got it FREE during Sale-a-bration!!) and I really like the lacy look it gives.  Here is the end result:

If your computer is like mine, the Amethyst looks a bit blue but I promise it really is purple!!  Something about the afternoon lighting in my house, I guess.  All the work on this card was really done by the DSP.  I put a matching strip at the bottom of the inside and cut out another flower to put in there.  Thanks for taking a look today (and don’t forget to give these challenges a try!).  Have a great weekend!

Masculine Sage?

Masculine Sage? published on 7 Comments on Masculine Sage?

I tried to combine a few challenges today and the first was from Our Creative Corner.  The challenge was to make a masculine birthday card.  I also used the latest sketch challenge from Stampin’ Royalty, their challenge #20.  Finally, I used the colors from Makeesha over at Inkspirations.  Take a look at the colors and the sketch!

The colors pretty much “required” me to use the Nouveau Chic DSP.  Now that Sage is retiring, I am using up my stock.

Without further discussion, here is my card (yes, the image panel does look crooked…I fixed it but didn’t have time to take a new picture):

I started with Oh, So Lovely (Ret) and tried to make it more masculine.  The paper certainly did the job but I’m not so sure the image is “manly”.  Oh well, challenges are jumping off points and I gave it the college try!  I have really enjoyed this DSP…just think, when I first ordered it I thought it would be “out of the box” for me!  I continue to find that the DSP’s from Stampin’ Up always exceed any expectation that I have!!  I did a little sponging  but otherwise the card is pretty straightforward.  I don’t have a particular need for this card but it is always so nice to have some in the “stash” ready to go!  Thanks for stopping by.  Have a great day!

Stamps:  Oh, So Lovely (ret), Short & Sweet; Paper:  Nouveau Chic DSP, Sage Shadow, Basic Gray, Very Vanilla; Ink:  Sage Shadow, Basic Gray, Apricot Appeal, Going Gray; Accessories:  Gray Corduroy button, thread (dyed Sage with the Marker), Blender Pen, Sponges

One sketch, two cards

One sketch, two cards published on No Comments on One sketch, two cards

I made these a while ago and never posted them (not sure why).  They use the beautiful Thoughts & Prayers set and the same layout.  Sadly, I can’t remember the source of the layout so if you recognize it, please let me know so that I can give proper credit!  These both have a clean and simple feel which makes them great for quick cards.  I love a “go-to” layout when you need a card in a hurry and this is certainly a good one.  It requires just a little designer paper to get a nice pop of texture and color.  The first card uses the flower from the set that was colored using Stampin’ Write markers in Bordering Blue (a retiring color), Pretty in Pink and Chocolate Chip.  The ribbon is retired SAB’09 grosgrain.

The second card uses the tree from the set.  I LOVE this tree.  Love it, love it, love it!!  I colored the tree with Sahara Sand and Chocolate markers and then used the rock-n-roll technique on the top with a Not Quite Navy pad.  The paper is Bella Bleu DSP.

I made these with a dear sister-in-law who was looking to have a set of cards for all occasions.  I love how you can make very different cards with the same layout just by changing the colors.  Thanks for stopping by to take a look.  Don’t forget to talk to your demonstrator about Bordering Blue and all the other retiring colors!!  Have a great Sunday!

Sweet Baja

Sweet Baja published on 6 Comments on Sweet Baja

Yes, oh yes, Baja Breeze is coming back!!  I’m so happy that Stampin’ Up chose to include this color as part of its Color Renovation.  This week’s Color Throwdown #92 includes this beautiful blue so I had to give it a try, of course.  The colors are Baja Breeze, So Saffron, Old Olive and Kraft.  I also wanted to give the Sweet Sunday Sketch Challenge #68 a try.  Take a look at this great layout:

Ever since I first saw the new Summer Mini, I have been wanting to try out the look of the bag on the front cover.  It uses the Elements of Style stamped onto the Presto Patterns DSP.  Wow, is this cool paper!!  I stamped the flowers, then watercolored with my blender pen and finally sponged with Sahara Sand ink.  I had intended to use some of my old Baja DSP for this card but once the stamped image was done, it just didn’t work.  Instead, I pulled out an Old Olive piece from the Sweet Pea DSP (Occasions mini, ret).  Much better!  I also played around with Baja and Kraft paper layers but finally came to this arrangement.  Yes, I added Chocolate Chip and hopefully no one minds too much.  The image panel just didn’t pop enough against the lighter colors.  I turned the sketch on its side and used some So Saffron wide grosgrain (SAB’09, ret), a Chocolate corduroy button and some thread that I dyed Old Olive.  And here it is:

I wanted this to be an anniversary card and I think it has the right romantic feel for that.  If you haven’t already tried this Presto Patterns paper, talk to you demonstrator.  You will have a great time with all the possibilities!  Glad you stopped by…have a great rest of your week!

Stamp:  Elements of Style; Paper:  Presto Patterns DSP, Sweet Pea DSP (Occasions mini), Chocolate Chip, So Saffron, Whisper White (inside);  Ink:  Baja Breeze, Sahara Sand, So Saffron, Old Olive;  Accessories:  Blender Pen, So Saffron ribbon (ret), Chocolate corduroy button, Dimensionals, thread

A new challenge and an old favorite

A new challenge and an old favorite published on No Comments on A new challenge and an old favorite

I was looking for inspiration for a thank you card today and I found it…times two!!  First of all, I found a brand spankin’ new challenge from Stampin’ Celebration!  You’ll recognize some of the names and faces, and you’ll be inspired by the fun colors.  Just look at this picture:

Conveniently enough, there is a compatible challenge over at Pals Paper Arts (PPA41).  For some reason I can’t link the picture so go take a look!  I used the colors from Stampin’ Celebration and the cool birds from the Pals to get my card moving along.  After I decided on the birds from Of the Earth, I played around with variations of using those squares.  As I started putting the card together, I realized that I had settled on a version of the Pals sketch from a few weeks ago (PPA38).  Well, a good sketch is one you can come back to over and over!!  I used the Melon Mambo DSP from the level 3 hostess set Lovely Flowers.  Can I tell you how happy I am that Melon Mambo is staying on as a new core color??!!  I’m not much of a pink girl but this pink really works for me!

I’m using this as a thank you card for a friend.  I hope she like the happy colors, too!  Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again soon!
