Santa's List by Jen Timko | Santa Paws Newtons Stamps and Dies by Newtons Nook Designs, Sentiments of the Season Stamp Set by Newton's Nook Designs, Be Merry DSP by Stampin' Up, Wink of Stella, Deck the Halls with Inky Paws HopThe hardest part of designing for this hop was narrowing down my choices!  This year’s holiday stamps and dies from Newton’s Nook Designs have been just over the top great.  But I kind of had to go “classic” so I pulled out Santa Paws Newton.  I love this set!  I stamped in Versafine Onyx Black and then colored Newton and his friends with my Winsor and Newton watercolor paints.  Once everything was dry, I added some Clear Wink of Stella to Santa Newton’s list for some extra shine.  Which brought me to choosing a sentiment.  How could I resist this one from Sentiments of the Season??  I added a layer of gold washi tape and some gold sequins to add even more shimmer.  Oh what fun!Santa's List Closeup by Jen Timko | Santa Paws Newton Stamp Set and Dies by Newton's Nook DesignsDeck the Halls with Inky Paws Special!

Freshly Made Sketches #316

Freshly Made Sketches #316 published on 9 Comments on Freshly Made Sketches #316

FMS316 by Jen Timko | Let It Snow Stamps and Dies by Honey Bee Stamps, WatercolorWell, I’m moving along on my holiday cards and even though I have some that are “mass producible”, I still mostly love when I have time to make a one of a kind card.  I took the opportunity of being the sketch hostess at Freshly Made Sketches as the excuse to take some watercoloring time for myself.

Before I get to the card, a little personal info.  Over the last 3 months I have been on a leave of absence from United Airlines.  Yesterday, it was back to reality.  I went out to Denver to our training center to get re-qualified in the simulator.  Fortunately, being on the same fleet (Airbus 319/320) for almost a decade allows me to not stress the simulators too much after time off.  The reason for the time off??  My husband has been deployed since the end of July.  For security reasons, I simply don’t discuss these things here or in social media but since he comes home this week I felt like I could share.  The boys and I are really happy to get him home!!  In the time he was gone:  one boy started middle school and the other high school, the oldest has grown 3 inches (!!), they both completed full travel soccer seasons, I stayed sane.  *smile*  United Airlines has no reason to have to help me under these circumstances but when I put in my leave request (and the reasons) I got an approval in about 3 days.  This is REAL military family support and I am very, very grateful to them for that.  As much as I love flying, I love being a mom more and this time with the boys has been really important to our family.  So while I am transitioning to getting back to work, this also means that we are almost done with the deployment!  YAY!!!

Now on to the card.  I guess the above explains a little more of why I was savoring some watercolor time.  I fell in love with this Let It Snow stamp set and coordinating dies from Honey Bee Stamps and simply had to use it as soon as possible.  In truth, I chose my sketch to accommodate coloring a scene.  I stamped this adorable snowman and then watercolored with my Winsor and Newton paints (along with some Daniel Smith colors too).  I thought it would be fun to make this guy look like he was creating winter magic.  The sentiment die and stamp are from the matching set and I love how the ‘Christmas’ layers.  I put it all on an Island Indigo card base to emphasize the little bit of blue on our snowy friend.

I hope you love this sketch and will have a few moments to play along this week.  I also want to take a moment to thank my dear friends for all their support during this long 4-1/2 months.  I have an incredibly great village (both local friends and stamping friends) who make all of this possible.  I am blessed and very grateful!  Back on Friday for a fun hop.  Until then, have a great day!

Fancy Friday

Fancy Friday published on 8 Comments on Fancy Friday

Welcome to this month’s Fancy Friday Blog Hop!  Our team is a group of stampers who love to make beautiful things.  Sometimes they are clean, sometimes they are layered but the one thing I can say for sure is that our projects will be fancy!  If you hopped over from the amazing Marisa Gunn, welcome to the next stop.  For November, we are all working with a sketch.  And you know I cannot resist a sketch!!

Fancy Friday - Cup of Cheer by Jen Timko | Merry Cafe Stamp Set by Stampin' Up, Coffee Cups Framelits by Stampin' Up, Coffee Break DSP by Stampin' Up, WatercolorI thought the sketch was a perfect one to show off this fun coffee cup set from Stampin’ Up.  It is called Merry Café and it can be found in the Holiday Catalog.  It is a sister set to the Coffee Café set from the main catalog and the dies from that set are used for both.  Fabulous!  I chose to do a quick watercolor on the cup using Soft Sky ink after stamping the cup, sentiments and snowflakes in Versafine Ink.  You want to make sure you use a water safe ink when you stamp.  After cutting them with the framelits and the Big Shot, I just popped them up on Dimensionals for the image panel.  To keep with the sketch, I added a strip of Soft Sky card stock along the side for a simple extra border that is a great way to use scraps.  The patterned paper for the crossing panel is from the Coffee Break DSP pack and I love those subtle chevrons.  I added some white cotton ribbon (SU ret) across the panel and tied it with some White Baker’s Twine.  Finally, I pulled some of the sequins from the October Paper Pumpkin kit as a finishing touch.  This card hits the sweet spot for this time of year for me.  Quick, cute and easy to duplicate!  I hope you enjoy it too!

Now I am really, REALLY excited to tell you that our Fancy Team has grown a bit.  Our new members will be introducing themselves over the next few months but I get the extraordinary pleasure of sending you over to one of my favorite stampers.  As an Artisan in 2011, Jennifer Picard has been one of my crafty heroes for a long time.  Truth be told, I’m a little star struck!  I know you will love her work as much as I do so hop right over to see what she has created.

You can click our logo above to get to the Fancy Friday Pinterest page!

Enjoy Autumn

Enjoy Autumn by Jen Timko | Autumn Newtons Stamp Set and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Happy Little Thoughts Stamp Set by Newton's Nook Designs, Winsor and Newton Paints, WatercolorToday is my day to share a project on the Newton’s Nook Designs Blog and I’m still in love with all things fall!  Apparently my little friend Newton is too and I pulled out Autumn Newton to color today.

Fall in Virginia is my favorite season and we are finally really entering the season.  About time!  It seemed late to arrive this year.  I love apples and pumpkins and oh do I love the leaves!  I used some of the local fall things as inspiration for my colors (See the spotty gourd?  My friend had a picture of one like that so I had to include it!)  The leaves next to the card are from my yard and I used those colors as a start for my leaf coloring.

Enjoy Autumn Close Up by Jen Timko | Autumn Newton Stamp Set and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Happy Little Thoughts Stamp Set by Newton's Nook Designs, Winsor and Newton Paints, WatercolorI thought that using my Winsor and Newton watercolor paints would be the perfect way to color this.  Something about how the paints layers that ink doesn’t makes it great for blending colors and layering texture.  I used Fabriano Extra White Watercolor Paper….one of my favorites.  While the stamp set has wonderful sentiments, I leaned on one of my go-to phrases from the Happy Little Thoughts stamp set.  I thought it fit this sweet image wonderfully!  I cut a the image layer shape with the Snow Globe Shaker Dies for a fun and different look.

I’m also linking this in to the Inspired by All the Little Things challenge….more gorgeous fall loveliness.  I hope you enjoy this autumn extra today!  Make sure to stop by the Newton’s Nook Designs blog for daily inspiration!!  See you tomorrow with the latest from Freshly Made Sketches.

Freshly Made Sketches #303

Freshly Made Sketches #303 published on 8 Comments on Freshly Made Sketches #303

FMS303 by Jen Timko | Happy Birds Stamp by WPlus9, Watercolor, Winsor and Newton PaintsHi everyone!  Sorry it has been a bit since I posted.  I needed a crafty break and had lots going on with my boys and work.  But I’m getting back to the craft room this week and will have lots for you in the upcoming weeks.  Today, I’m excited to join back in with the latest from Freshly Made Sketches.  Our host this week is the extraordinary Karren Johnson, queen of coloring.  And she has such a fun sketch this week.  One that allows for elements to be combined and all kinds of creativity.

After puttering around in my stamp room like I had no clue for a while, I finally settled on this set.  Something about these birds always make me happy!  Well, they are Happy Birds.  I stamped with Versafine Onyx Black on Bristol Smooth paper and then colored with my Winsor and Newton Watercolors.  Instead of a “real” panel, I painted on some stripes for the vertical elements.  Hopefully Karren forgives my loose interpretation of this part of the sketch.  I love the stitched dies with the stitched details of the stamps so that was my final touch.  I used the new Mini Dimensionals for attaching the bird and other little things.  I have to say that this new size from Stampin’ Up is a must have for your glue arsenal (and I know we are all collectors of just the right adhesives).

I think that like many in the US, I have been a little overwhelmed by what I am seeing in Texas.  Watercoloring yesterday was good for my soul.  Later today, I’ll be working on what I can do to help.  There are many good references on what is needed and reliable organizations who will have boots on the ground to help.  If you are not sure where to go, start here:  United Airlines Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.  They have links to donate to vetted charities and you can even get a few frequent flyer miles for your donation.

Back to the stamp room for me and I’ll see you soon.  Thanks so much for stopping in today.  I hope you have a happy Wednesday.

Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Believe in Unicorns

Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Believe in Unicorns published on 25 Comments on Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Believe in Unicorns

Welcome to day 1 of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs.  You are going to have so much fun with this group of stamps.  I can hardly wait to share!  And we are starting off with unicorns!!  Yep really….unicorns!  I believe and you will too!!

I Believe In You by Jen Timko | Believe in Unicorns Stamp and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Zig Clean Color Markers, Land Borders Dies by Newton's Nook DesignsLook at these adorable images!!  They just beg for pretty, bright colors.  I stamped them onto Strathmore Bristol paper using Versafine Onyx Black ink and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder.   I watercolored using Zig Clean Color Markers in “rainbow” colors.  It is such fun to play with how the colors blend and the unicorn is the perfect place to try out combinations.  Once colored, I cut the images out with the matching dies.  I also added some extra clouds from the Winston Takes Flight set.  Love how so many sets coordinate together.  I created a curved layer using the Land Borders Dies and then sponged on a little bit of Distress Ink to help the image pop a bit.  I used Melon Mambo card stock to frame the image panel.  A clean card that focuses on the bright and happy colors!  Such fun to create and I can’t wait to color these images some more!!  And here is the best part…

Would you like to win the “Believe in Unicorns” Stamp Set?
This set will be given away to ONE lucky winner!

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration Blog Hop

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration Blog Hop published on 45 Comments on Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration Blog Hop

First of all, today is the day that the 4 Year Celebration release goes live over at Newton’s Nook Designs.  To continue the fun, we are having a blog hop and I’m so thrilled to be a part of it.

Reach for the Stars by Jen Timko | Cosmic Newton Stamp and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Starfield Stencil by Newton's Nook Designs, Tim Holtz Distress Ink, Perfect Pearls, Land Border Dies by Newton's Nook DesignsI told you yesterday that my favorite set from this release was Cosmic Newton (but seriously, choosing a favorite is like choosing a favorite ice cream…I love them all!).  I used the new Stampin’ Up Embossing paste with the Starfield stencil on watercolor paper to start off my background.  Next I added Chipped Sapphire Distress ink by painting it on with a brush.  I got some of the light and dark coloring with that but wanted a little more dark.  So I pulled out the trusty acetate and smooshed some more ink on, spritzed with water and applied to the panel.  After it dried a bit, I spritzed on a Perfect Pearls mixture (in a spritzer with the powder and some water) to get a shine on the panel.  And finally, I splattered on some Smooch Ink to add some extra “stars).  I added a bit more of the Perfect Pearls onto the stars to help them pop.  For the trees behind Newton, I used the Land Borders Dies.  I was thrilled when it looked like the tops of trees in the shadows.  Finally, I colored Newton and his telescope with some more Distress Ink.  What a fun card to make!!  This set just lends itself to fabulous backgrounds and tons of creativity!

I’m sure you notice how much fun I have had with the stencils this week.  Well, there is a great deal that you are sure to love!So pretty much you can get the Pawprints stencil free on the order you were already going to make!  WIN!!  And speaking of winning…there is even MORE to win this week.

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 4

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 4 published on 29 Comments on Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 4

Today is the last day of reveals for the 4 year celebration with Newton’s Nook Designs.  But fear not…we are back tomorrow with a bonus hop to complete the celebration!!  But first, I get to share with you my very favorite set from this release!  It is called Cosmic Newton.  Oh my goodness is it fantastic!

Out of this world by Jen Timko | Cosmic Newton Stamp and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Starfield Stencil by Newton's Nook Designs, Watercolor, Winsor and Newton Watercolors, Perfect PearlsFor this card, I thought it would be fun to play with watercolor paints.  So I started with the background.  On a piece of watercolor paper, I painted on some blues and even a little purple to create a sky that would be right for the new Starfield stencil.  After letting my panel dry, I used the stencil as an embossing plate but running it through my Big Shot with an Impressions Pad and a Silicone Rubber Pad.  It gives a subtle embossing look that I was really happy with.  You can see me more of the detail here:Closeup by Jen Timko | Cosmic Newton Stamp and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Starfield Stencil by Newton's Nook Designs

But then I returned to using the stencil as just a stencil.  I kept it in place and the sponged on some white craft ink on the stars toward the top of the card.  Then I brushed a bit of Perfect Pearls on top of that to add some shimmer.  I have to confess that I’m pretty in love with the whole effect!!  For my friend Newton, I thought he needed a really special rocket to stand out against the sky, so I chose purple for his ship.  It is hard to tell here but I added some more Perfect Pearls on the window around Newton and also on the banner.

I hope you have enjoyed all of the release projects this week!  The team has certainly provided a ton of inspiration!!  And this release has been simply spectacular!  And now…your chance to win one more time!

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 3 (and FMS)

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 3 (and FMS) published on 41 Comments on Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 3 (and FMS)

Back with day 3 of the 4 year celebration with Newton’s Nook Designs.  Today we are showing off one set that I just think is adorable.  It is called Toucan Party…such fun!  I combined the reveal with the sketch from Freshly Made Sketches (where I am the sketch hostess this week).

Toucan Do It by Jen Timko | Toucan Party Stamp Set and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Tim Holtz Distress Ink, Tropical Leaves Stencil by Newton's Nook DesignsThe first thing I did for this card was pull out the awesome new Tropical Leaves stencil and create this background with Distress Ink (Twisted Citron and Mowed Lawn).  Just look at what a great foundation it gives a card.  Can I tell you how happy I am for these new stencils??  And it seems like all of you are loving them too!  Then I stamped the toucan and some leaves and flowers using Versafine Onyx Black ink and colored using more Distress Ink.  Want to see my “muse” for this one?

Just look at his amazing coloring!!!  Nature certainly does it best so I just mimicked his colors.  And I LOVE them!!  Check out his little blue feet!!!  Yeah…I know.  Who can resist that?!  Clearly not me!  I colored some of the leaves as a background for him and then the flower as a balance element.  I used the small panel of the sketch to show off part of the sentiment (and the puns in this one are super fun).  Here is the sketch if you want to join in this week…I’d be thrilled to see you!

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 1

Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 1 published on 40 Comments on Newton’s Nook Designs 4 Year Celebration – Day 1

I am so thrilled to begin this amazing week celebrating 4 years of inspiration from Newton’s Nook Designs.  What it takes to make the leap of faith to start your own company always amazes me but wow am I glad Newton’s Nook Designs is a part of this amazing industry!  I might be a little biased but any time art can bring such smiles and joy, it is a wonderful thing and something to celebrate.  And celebrate is what we are doing this week!  My post today is longer than normal because we are revealing an incredible set of products.  Two (yep TWO) stamp sets, four (oh yeah…FOUR) stencils and a new border dies set.  And that is only today’s reveal.  Hang on my friends!  This is going to be fun!

Meet Me At The Lake by Jen Timko | Winston's Lake House Stamps and Dies by Newton's Nook Designs, Tim Holtz Distress Inks, Watercolor

I’m going to start you off with a fun stamp set called Winston’s Lake House.  Using Distress Ink in Broken China, I played with the “smoosh” technique for watercoloring.  I applied ink to an acetate sheet and then spritzed it with water.  Then I laid the acetate down onto Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper to get the cool water effect.  I love how it turned out!!  The way the color pools was perfect to created the dimension I wanted for the lake.  After letting it dry, I used the new Sea Borders Dies (combined with a Stitched Rectangles Die) to created the waves for our little friends.  All I had to do was offset the border die to get this look.  Fun, right??  I did the same thing with Peeled Paint ink for the ground and used the Land Borders Dies instead.  Yep…all the dies coordinate perfectly.  Then I stamped the images in Versafine Onyx Black and colored with more Distress Ink.  That little cottage is one I want to visit for sure!  And not sure what it is about the little dragonfly but I just could not resist adding it on.  The corrugated paper seemed like the perfect background for this scene to show off all the details in these new images and dies.Advice from the Lake by Jen Timko | Lake Advice Stamp Set by Newton's Nook Designs, Wood Textures DSP by Stampin' UpSo now on to the second stamp set called Lake Advice.  I had a ton of ideas on how to use this with the Winston set but I thought maybe it was better just to focus on this sentiment.  It is really a great one!  I stamped it onto vellum using Early Espresso ink (SU) and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder to make it really stand out.  Then I took a piece of the Wood Textures DSP from SU (already a fabulous wooden look) and cut it up to make it look like planks on a palette.  I used a darker color of the same DSP for the base.

And now we get to talk about these stencils.  You should have seen the response when the DT heard about them.  And then again when we saw them!!!  Oh, they are fun and so perfect for the release.  Want to see them???  Of course you do!  I will be showing you more with them as the week goes on too.  And then check out what you could win this week!
