Freshly Made Sketches #304

I’m working on continuing my coloring for The Daily Marker 30 Day Coloring Challenge (running this month) and I thought this sweet little image from Power Poppy would be perfect for the latest sketch from Freshly Made Sketches. Narelle Farrugia, who always created with the most beautiful details, designed this awesome sketch for us this week. An instant classic!

I decided that this was another image that was great for the Chameleon Color Tops. I looked at the coloring on coreopsis flowers and the blend from red to yellow was a natural for these cool pens. I used the YO2 Mellow Yellow pen and infused with RD3 Vermillion. Fun, right? The transition from red to yellow is just like the flowers. I added a sentiment from the set too. The image was cut out using the Stitched Shapes Dies (SU). The corrugated paper gives a little detail for the sketch and I added some jute twine.

Now, back to the coloring. If you haven’t heard about the coloring challenge or have not yet joined in, consider it. Kathy encourages just a little coloring every day. Just for fun! Rainy Day

Today is my day to share a project on the Newton’s Nook Designs Blog and given the news from Texas, my inspiration for this isn’t too hard to guess. I thought that Newton’s Rainy Day was the perfect set for creating a card right now.

As soon as I pulled out this image with the big umbrella, I thought that my new Chameleon Color Tops would be fun to use. And yep, was I right! The shading on each panel was created by starting with a base color pen and then infusing with another color. So my Fuchsia (PK5) pen was infused with Mellow Yellow (YO2) and what a cool effect, don’t you think?! Same with the Turquoise (BG3) (infused with Mellow Yellow). For the duck I used Mellow Yellow infused with Tangerine (OR3). The kitty is Neutral Gray (NG4).

I combined “regular” Chameleon use with the Color Tops on this and it is amazing how much fun it was to experiment with color options. Once I finished coloring, I was looking for just the right background when this one virtually jumped out at me. Um, yeah…the ombré yellow from the Color Theory DSP matched perfectly! I created a little frame and added some sequins and left most of the focus on this adorable image and its bright colors. I hope you like my Newton’s extra this month. Freshly Made Sketches #303

Hi everyone! Sorry it has been a bit since I posted. I needed a crafty break and had lots going on with my boys and work. But I’m getting back to the craft room this week and will have lots for you in the upcoming weeks. Today, I’m excited to join back in with the latest from Freshly Made Sketches. Our host this week is the extraordinary Karren Johnson, queen of coloring. And she has such a fun sketch this week. One that allows for elements to be combined and all kinds of creativity.

After puttering around in my stamp room like I had no clue for a while, I finally settled on this set. Something about these birds always make me happy! Well, they are Happy Birds. I stamped with Versafine Onyx Black on Bristol Smooth paper and then colored with my Winsor and Newton Watercolors. Instead of a “real” panel, I painted on some stripes for the vertical elements. Hopefully Karren forgives my loose interpretation of this part of the sketch. I love the stitched dies with the stitched details of the stamps so that was my final touch. I used the new Mini Dimensionals for attaching the bird and other little things. I have to say that this new size from Stampin’ Up is a must have for your glue arsenal (and I know we are all collectors of just the right adhesives).

I think that like many in the US, I have been a little overwhelmed by what I am seeing in Texas. Watercoloring yesterday was good for my soul. Later today, I’ll be working on what I can do to help. There are many good references on what is needed and reliable organizations who will have boots on the ground to help. Newton’s Nook Designs and Chibitronics Inspiration Week plus a Giveaway

This week Newton’s Nook Designs and Chibitronics are partnering for a fabulous inspiration week! All week long both design teams will be sharing ways to light up your cards using Chibi lights with Newton’s Nook Designs stamps! This is a match just made to work together since so many of the NND sets have features that are perfect for lighting up.

As soon as I heard about the collaboration, my first thought was this dragon from Knight’s Quest. I just knew that somehow he had to have “real” fire! I started by coloring the images with Copic Markers (I have colors listed in my YouTube video). I cut the hills using the Land Borders Dies (NND) and stitched rectangles dies (SSS). My base is the new Tranquil Tide card stock (a Stampin’ Up In Color) that is sponged with Night of Navy ink. The hills are Night of Navy and Smoky Slate (SU). I put one of the red lights behind the fire and yellow lights behind the windows to create this awesome interactive card. Want to see it lit?!

It is so awesome in person too! I created a short video to show you a few more specifics on how I created the circuit and the “switch” for this. Things I learned along the way….Think of a fun place for the switch so that it is easy for the recipient, make sure you press the copper tape on really well (I used a bone folder), check your circuits before gluing stuff down (I may have checked a few too many time, haha). The kit comes with great directions on building your circuits. Mine is a pretty basic parallel circuit. Here is my video so you can see the rest:

Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Autumn Newton

Welcome to the last of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs. I’m sure you have been waiting to see what Newton would be up to this month and we finally get to share! He is getting ready for Fall!! I knew I loved that kitty!

I have been getting a little push back from a certain calico I know that there have not been any Kate’s in my Newton release repertoire lately. I tried to tell her that calico orange is difficult to match with other colors, especially in spring and summer palettes. I was rewarded with a sprinkling of kitty glitter (cat fur) all over everything to prove the error of my ways. Thankfully, “calico” matches fall perfectly so here she is. Kate playing in the leaves!! After stamping in Versafine Onyx Black ink, I colored the image on the Bristol paper using my Zig Clean Color Markers. I used a couple of shades of each color to mimic the shading on the leaves we get in our yard every autumn. To created the card, I used a sheet from my old This and That books from SU. These were smash styled scrapbooks that have awesome prints. In a recent crafty cleanup, I found one of the books and removed all the pages that were unused “just in case”. I totally LOVE it as a layer here!! I put some corrugated kraft paper underneath and added a little twine under Kate (Newton). Now I’m all ready to start feeling a little of the crisp cool air of autumn in Virginia (my favorite season here!). And you know the deal by now….you can win this set for free (it really is a great part of release week!).

Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Knight’s Quest

Welcome to day 3 of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs (this is post 2 for today, keep scrolling if looking for Freshly Made Sketches). You definitely needed something to go with the princess and what better than this new little knight in Knight’s Quest?!

I took a bit of a break from all the girly pink to create this fun magic slider card. I had never made one of these are they are cool to make! (and disclaimer…almost impossible to photograph!!) I stamped the images using my Misti onto Strathmore Bristol paper using Versafine Onyx Black Ink. Then I stamped it again on a window sheet using Stazon (make sure you clean your stamps immediately but not using the Stazon cleaner since it will damage photopolymer stamps). I colored the image on the Bristol paper using my Zig Clean Color Markers. My slider was created using the Sea Borders Dies to give a little place to pull. I used some retired DSP from SU as the frame for our brave fellow and added the little arrow from the set to show that the panel should be pulled. Want to see it in action?!

I wanted to finish the announcement idea so I finished the inside of the card with an actual announcement from the set. Just a quick stamp and color of the trumpet and this sentiment is adorable. I love the idea of this card for a little boy who loves knights, don’t you?! Just so great to have a set that is perfect for little boys (and big ones since mine were obsessed with playing around with the slider). And you can get the set free for yourself!

Freshly Made Sketches #301

This is my first post for today (my second, for the August release from NND will be up shortly following). After an amazing week of inspiration and celebration from Freshly Made Sketches, we are on our way to the next 300 sketches this week. The sketch hostess is our lovely friend Jen Brum and she has a unique angled sketch for us this week. I’m in love!!

I chose to make another Christmas card since I’m starting to get the holiday card making buzz. What better image than this beautiful flower from the Poinsettia stamp by Simon Says Stamp? I’m taking another Copic coloring class this Friday (YAY!!!) and I thought I should probably put in a little practice before going. So out came my reds and off to coloring I went. I added in some leaves from the set for another pop of color and then made the rest using Vanilla and Black. Yes, Vanilla. Because Stampin’ Up has a new Thick Vanilla card stock that is amazing!!!! And it works beautifully for Copic coloring!! I chose this sentiment from Concord and 9th since I thought it was a nice fit on the angle and then added some sequins in black. This patterned paper is retired from Stampin’ Up (I have huge stash of black and vanilla papers that I think will finally get the love they deserve!).

Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Once Upon a Princess

Welcome to day 2 of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs. If you enjoyed the magic of yesterday’s reveal, you are sure to love today’s stamp set called Once Upon a Princess. And what a beautiful princess she is!

I rarely work in so much pink but, you know, sometimes you just have to go all in! I colored our little beauty using shades of pink and purple to create a dress worthy of her highness. Then I played around with castle colors to make one any of us would love to have. I seem to have an obsession with shaker cards lately and this pack of pink sequins and beads was the perfect filler for my super girly card. I have the perfect recipient and mind and she LOVES princesses. And this just happens to look a little like her. Isn’t it awesome when you find a stamp set that you know is sure to bring a smile?!! Newton’s Nook Designs August Release – Believe in Unicorns

Welcome to day 1 of the August release from Newton’s Nook Designs. You are going to have so much fun with this group of stamps. I can hardly wait to share! And we are starting off with unicorns!! Yep really….unicorns! I believe and you will too!!

Look at these adorable images!! They just beg for pretty, bright colors. I stamped them onto Strathmore Bristol paper using Versafine Onyx Black ink and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder. I watercolored using Zig Clean Color Markers in “rainbow” colors. It is such fun to play with how the colors blend and the unicorn is the perfect place to try out combinations. Once colored, I cut the images out with the matching dies. I also added some extra clouds from the Winston Takes Flight set. Love how so many sets coordinate together. I created a curved layer using the Land Borders Dies and then sponged on a little bit of Distress Ink to help the image pop a bit. I used Melon Mambo card stock to frame the image panel. A clean card that focuses on the bright and happy colors! Such fun to create and I can’t wait to color these images some more!! And here is the best part…

Freshly Made Sketches #300

So today is a very special day for the whole team at Freshly Made Sketches. We have hit another milestone and we are thrilled to celebrate! Sketch #300!! WOW! I’m personally just in awe of the inspiration that all the players over the years have given. I might be a little biased but this has been an amazing challenge from the very beginning. And yes….I actually played along on Sketch #1. I even got chosen as a Perfect Princess by my friend Linda (I knew I loved her, haha!!!). Jen Mitchell, Linda Callahan and Rita Wright have been on the team since the beginning and we have had amazing stampers with us along the way. What a privilege it is to work with people who are not only extraordinarily talented but also are simply incredible people!!

So that was my inspiration for today’s card. The sentiment pretty much says it all (it is from the gorgeous new Vibrant Thanks by Power Poppy)! Thanks to you, my blog readers, and to all who play along each week and keep this challenge fresh week after week. I enjoy seeing your creations, and watching as you all grow in your crafting along with us. After all, we are first and foremost enablers! I used this beautiful paper from last year’s Stampin’ Up Catalog (this year’s catalog features a fresh version in the new In Colors). I love how the leaves in the paper coordinate with the new Layered Leaves embossing folder so I combined them for the panels. I added some Navy twine that I unravelled to give it a looser look. I even lined the envelope with designer paper to make it extra special.

And I really tried to make this extra special since one of our players this week will win all the cards created by the team for this challenge. I know. And I already asked if I could enter again…. Apparently it would look suspicious if I won. *smile* I continue to be astonished at how different cards can be that are created from the same sketch and the design team has created a beautiful variety for you this week. I very much hope you will have time to join us in our celebration. Having a hard time not getting too “sappy” (as my kids call me) so I’ll leave it there. I’ll see you in the gallery.
